Canthoplasty is a procedure to increase the eye width. The general width of Asian eyes is 20-29mm. Normally, the eyes with a width of 31 to 32mm appear the brightest and most ideal.

Epicanthoplasty makes the eyes bigger by releasing the Mongolian folds, and lateral canthoplasty makes the eyes bigger by opening the lateral side of the eyes.

CDU’s canthoplasty is a complex and advanced type of canthoplasty which creates eyes more in harmony with the face, by considering many factors such as the distance between the eyes, the orbital bone to the end of the eyes, and the volume of the lacrimal lake, which holds tears. CDU performs four types of canthoplasty depending on the individual’s physical characteristics: medial epi, upper, lateral, and lowering canthoplasty. CDU surgeons will find you the ideal ratio which suits your eyes best.

Medial Epicanthoplasty

No more worry about scarring (scar-free canthoplasty). With strong Mongolian folds, the medial side of the eyes looks stuffy and the eyes seem too far apart from each other.

In these kinds of situations, epicanthoplasty makes the eyes bigger and achieves a more balanced location. When the Mongolian folds are too strong, simultaneous medial canthoplasty makes the eyes look more natural and brighter at the same time. In some cases, upper canthoplasty can be performed as well to achieve a more ideal shape. Upper canthoplasty makes the eyes bigger vertically at the medial corner, so it is recommended to those whose eyes are very steep and narrow at the inner corner.

Recommended for

  • Eyes with a narrow width
  • Slanted eyes which give a stern impression
  • Small eyes
  • Stuffy looking eyes caused by strong Mongolian folds (the epicanthal folds)

Surgery Process

01

Through accurate measurement and diagnosis, the ideal design is made on the eyes.

02

The Mongolian folds at the medial side of the eyes are incised.

03

The Mongolian folds are released and the wound is tightly closed to prevent scarring.

04

More ideal and bigger eyes are achieved.

Lateral Canthoplasty

No worry about recurrence.

When it comes to making bigger eyes, if the distance between the eyes is too great or if the eyes slant upward too much, giving an unfriendly and piercing look, lateral canthoplasty can be performed, making the eyes longer and more attractive.

CDU lateral and lowering canthoplasty lengthen the eyes by incising out the lateral corner, as well as finding the most appropriate shape by adjusting the angle of the eyes.

Recommended for

  • Eyes which are too close together
  • Eyes which are too slanted
  • Small and narrow eyes
  • Eyes which are asymmetrical due to being on different levels
  • Those who would like to have a more friendly look

Surgery Process

01

The ideal eyes are designed, considering the patient’s condition and needs.

02

An appropriate amount of skin is removed around the corner of the eyes. The outer corners of the eyes are securely fixed at a natural angle.

03

The wound is sutured delicately to hide the scar.

04

Naturally bigger and brighter eyes are achieved.

Considerations before lateral canthoplasty

  • The area where the eyes are enlarged will not have lashes.
  • The lower eyelids around the surgical areas can become loose.
  • Eye-closing strength can be weakened, so the eye-closing strength should be checked by a surgeon before surgery.
  • There is a possibility of eye dryness.

CDU Multi-Canthoplasty

CDU multi-canthoplasty is not a simple procedure which enlarges the size of the eyes, but an advanced procedure to adjust the length and the angle of the eyes by considering each patient’s facial proportions and facial structure.

As CDU’s signature surgery, multi-canthoplasty includes all canthoplasty in any direction of the eyes. This surgery allows the eyes to be enlarged in any direction to achieve a more favorable impression.

  • Medial-epi
  • Lowering
  • Lateral canthoplasty

Canthoplasty Q&A

How much can the eyes be enlarged?

Bigger eyes don’t always mean more beautiful eyes. Every individual has different sized eyeballs and a different shaped orbital bone.

Beautiful and attractive eyes can be obtained by eye surgery, but how, and how much the eyes should change should be decided by an eye surgery specialist, considering one’s proportions and condition.

What causes the eyes to eventually close up again after lateral canthoplasty?

This commonly happens when the outer corners are cut and opened to make the eyes bigger. During the recovery process, the wound heals and new tissues can cause the eyes to become closed at the surgical site again.

At CDU, the skin under the eyes is removed to prevent this situation. Alternatively, to minimize the length of the incision, the eye corner can be sutured at the lower point of the eye without removing excess skin. With these techniques, the size can be made significantly bigger, while still obtaining the effect of lowering canthoplasty.

I would like to have bigger eyes, but don’t want to have double folds.

When canthoplasty is performed with double eyelid surgery, a more dramatic result can be achieved. However, if a patient doesn’t want to change their appearance this much, we recommend monolid double eyelid surgery. Monolid double eyelid surgery creates small double folds. The double folds are not visible when the eyes are opened, but the eyes become brighter and defined.
